This is a used handmade bit made by the late Jerry Cates. It is marked Cates and 724 on the mouth piece.  Mr. Cates was posthumously honored by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum with the Chester A. Reynolds Award for his contribution to the preservation of the legacy of the American West.  He is listed in both spur books by Ned and Jody Martin.   It is steel with a natural patina and is mounted with ten pieces of engraved nickel silver.   There are copper inlaid stripes on the back of the mouth piece. There are some marks on the mountings from use.  It is not bent, broken, or repaired. This would be a nice bit to use or to add to a collection.Measurements: Cheek Pieces 6 ½”, Mouth (between cheeks) 5 ¼”, Mouth Piece Diameter ½”, Bit Weight 11.6 ounces
