UNIQUE TRADITIONAL BASQUE MAKILA HANDMADE FROM CONGO CHESTNUT WOOD
I POST WORLDWIDE
This traditional Basque walking stick is known as a makila, a walking cane used by hunters, hikers and herders as both a walking aid and for protection from wild animals. The top portion of the cane, which is covered in a handsome woven leather, can be pulled off the top of the stick to reveal a hidden spike or blade, effectively turning the stick into a short spear. The stick is capped with a flattened knob or pommel made of horn. Length: 36 1/2" STEPS TO MAKE A GENUINE TRADITIONAL MAKILA
The pommel, made of horn. Formerly, ox horn was used for such.
A slevee holds the hilt of skin, while pressing the pommel. It´s in this slevee where dedications and sentences are written to suit to each customer or recipient´s liking.
The handle is a tube covered with kid skin. After doing several straps with the kid´s skin, the craftsman braid its to cover the tube.
The rapier is hidden under the handle.Made with stainless steel.
At the bottom of makila usually is placed another slevee. In it, the craftsman engraves decorative motifs about the Basque symbols.
The medlar´s wood often is decorated with special shapes. The medlar is the only tree that, healing the wounds that previously made the craftsman in it, creates original reliefs like decoration in its skin. So it is the best suited to produce the makila.
The tip of the makila that touches the ground is made of steel.
