This is a used but fully functional DeLorme inReach Explorer. It contains everything that came in the original box - inReach, USB cord, wall charger, lanyard, belt clip, owners manual - and the box! All the features of the inReach SE, plus navigation, digital compass, barometric altimeter, accelerometer, waypoints, trip statistics, and track logging.2-way SMS/email communication from anywhere on the planet. No smartphone is required, but it's easier to TXT using a Bluetooth connected phone, with the free Earthmate app.You will have to activate and subscribe for service. Many annual or month to month options are available on DeLorme's web site. You can also suspend service when not needed and start it again with out another activation fee. See DeLorme's web site for details. Also available from GEOS Alliance (the emergency response service that answer the SOS call) are Search and Rescue coverage and Medical Evacuation coverage, for those who could use it. See GEOSAlliance. com  The unit is not activated and has factory default settings. It is ready to be activated.I'll share what I learned about how these work so you don't have to:You'll have to activate the unit and select a service plan. You can either get an annual plan or month to month. (Freedom Plan) As I recall, finding the month to month options was a little tricky ... they really want you to pay for the entire year. If you get the month to month, you can Suspend (not cancel) the service and start it back up when you need it. You commit to a full months service. If you miss the deadline and then suspend, you have service until the end of the new month. You can send a message to either an email address or a phone number (SMS text message). When a person receives an email from you, they have to click a link in the email to go to a web page, where they can reply. An SMS text message they can simple reply to like any other TXT they get. Note that each user will get your message from a DIFFERENT source phone number, so you won't be able to give out a number for people to use to TXT you - you have to message them first. Another option for people to message you is you can set up MapShare (as I recall it being called) so you have a unique URL. You can set a password on that page to keep out those not invited. Your people can then go to that page, enter the password (if set) and send you a message. They can also live track your location, if you enable that feature. You can set up "preset" messages. When sending one of these you DO NOT use any of your monthly messages (if you have a limited plan.) A couple ideas on how to use this - set one up for each person you'd like to receive TXTs from. Send those presets to them with something like, "Save this message. Reply to it if you need to contact me." Then you can get the ball rolling for them to TXT you without any extra charge. Another use is weather reports for your location - see wx2inreach.weebly. com for a free service. For a commercial weather service (annual subscription) that gives more details, specific to aviation or marine uses, see OCENS. command look for SpotCast, WaveCast and FlyCast services under weather. Only the received message will count to your quota.A new feature just added by DeLorme is Weather updates built in to the device. Basic weather uses 1 text message. Enhanced and Marine weather is available at $1 per forecast. These enhanced messages give you a longer forecast range, plus Marine gives wave height, current, visibility, etc. Basic and Enhanced are from forecast.io, Marine is from OCENS. Only use the SOS for an emergency - you press SOS, helicopters come! Expect the GEOS Response Center to ask for details...* Iridium satellite network ensures 100% pole-to-pole coverage with no gaps or fringe areas* Freedom plans with contract-free, month-to-month subscriptions from $14.95 per month or annual subscriptions from $11.95 per month* Adjustable tracking intervals from 2 minutes to 4 hours allow you to track your trip and share your location, including GPS coordinates, elevation, speed, and course* View location information on-board (coordinates, course, elevation and speed)* Personal locator beacon sends SOS signals with GPS location data to GEOS worldwide emergency response; communicate with GEOS via 2-way text messaging throughout the rescue* Provides audio and visual delivery confirmation on all messages sent to notify you of successful transmission* Send free-form, 160-character texts or predefined messages to phones, email, social media and other inReach units; read incoming messages on the color screen* Wirelessly transform your Apple iOS or Android mobile device into a global navigation tool and satellite communicator when you pair it to inReach with the free Earthmate app* Earthmate app displays your real-time GPS coordinates and route on a digital map; MapShare portal shares your location and movements with friends* Earthmate app also lets you download unlimited topographic and NOAA maps when connected to the internet; access the cached maps even when you're outside of cellular range* LED indicator shows satellite availability; audible message notification helps guarantee you don't miss an incoming message* Waterproof, dustproof and impact-resistant body shrugs off the abuse of harsh environments; the unit can be submerged down to 1m for up to 30 min.* The Delorme inReach 2-Way Satellite Communicator features a rechargeable lithium battery that delivers about 100 hours of operation when tracking at 10 min. intervals* Comes with a wall charger and USB cord for easy recharging* Enterprise plans also available for inReach customers to enable tracking intervals of 5, 2 and 1 minute, and 30 seconds; contact DeLorme directly for Enterprise Plans* Made in USA.A Few More Random Details:DeLorme was recently bought by Garmin. The DeLorme inReach is in a category of devices known as "Satellite Early Notification Device (SEND)." The SPOT communicators are also SEND devices. For anyone that may need to either stay in touch or have SOS available in remote locations - hunting, fishing, hiking, sailing, polar explorers, or even remote area driving with limited cell service. Your car breaks down, no problem, TXT for help. The false alarm rate for EPIRB, ELT, PLB type devices is apparently about 90%! Use SOS for life threatening emergencies only. GEOS will ask for details if you do trigger SOS, to confirm the need.Sending "Pre-Set" messages are free. When using your smartphone to TXT in a remote area, put your phone in "Airplane Mode" and then turn just the Bluetooth back on to save battery. When you activate, you will get something assigned that looks like an email address, called an "inReach Address." This IS NOT an email address. You can use this only to send a message to another inReach device, by having their inReach address and they having yours. You can send test messages for free from the DeLorme account web site. The feature called "MapShare" is the one where you can allow people to see your location, request an updated location or send you a message from a web site. You can enable this feature under the "Social" tab at explore.delorme.com. You can also configure things so you can either post to Facebook or Twitter from your inReach device. Keywords: SPOT Gen3 Globalstar GPS Explorer SE Plus
