A fee will also be levied on any goods requiring repacking; please contact us for further details. Please see below for responses to some of our most frequently asked questions and queries. Can you manufacture made to measure covers?
No. However if your requirement is on a large scale we can order particular sizes from our suppliers in the Far East. We work on a minimum 4 month lead time, and minimum quantities will apply; please contact us for details. For immediate requirements we can supply you with UK companies who specialise in bespoke covers; details will be passed on upon request. Why is there a seam on my cover?
Most tarps need a seam as it is impossible to fabricate a tarpaulin without heat sealing several pieces of polyethylene together. A seam may not be necessary on some of the smaller sizes as they can be fabricated from one piece of material. This also applies to dust sheets where a seam is stitched.Do you offer a guarantee to the lifespan of your tarpaulins?
No. As all of our tarpaulins are subject to varying weather conditions and put to so many different uses we cannot guarantee the length of time they will last. Generally speaking a heavier grade tarpaulin is more likely to last longer than an economy grade tarp, which we recommend for temporary use only. To maximize the lifespan of your tarpaulin we recommend to securely fasten your cover. Please bear in mind that eyelets can also come under a lot of pressure, and so any stress points should be reinforced. While the material a tarp is made from may be heavy duty, no such guarantee is given to the eyelets. Fixing additional eyelets can help spread the load. Please also avoid any sharp edges and constant friction which can reduce the lifespan of your cover. What size are the eyelets? Are they on all four sides of the tarpaulin?
The standard inside diameter on the majority of our tarpaulin eyelets is approximately 12mm. However, eyelets on the Black/Silver Super Tarpaflex Plus and Olive Green PVC Tarpaulins are currently 20mm.
Eyelets are on all 4 corners and spaced all around the hemmed edges. On a tarpaulin with riveted corner patches, you can expect the inside diameter to be approx 8mm.The outline eyeholes on scaffold sheeting are approx 15mm in diameter.
Additional eyelets in both 12mm and 20mm diameters are available for purchase from our Accessories section. How long until I receive my order?
Please see delivery information on the Delivery page for full details. In summary, standard orders are up to 3-5 working days from date of order. How can I cancel my order?
By simply phoning 01409 221192 and speaking to one of our friendly sales representatives.Do Tarpaflex Tarpaulins stand up to windy conditions? What is the best way to secure a tarpaulin?
Yes. However it is essential that the tarp is tied down properly; if it is not it may tear and the eyelets may fall out.Tarpaflex therefore cannot be held responsible for weather related damage to tarpaulins. We always recommend using bungee cords wherever possible; these are available for purchase in the 'Accessories' section. It is also recommended to tie down the tarp with rope, by fastening rope around the item to be covered. Furthermore, eyelets are provided as an aid to securing the tarp - they are not designed to have pressure applied to them by ratchet straps or any other misuse. We strongly recommend the use of extra eyelets. Are Tarpaulins-togo Tarpaulins guaranteed?
Yes they are. All our products are guaranteed waterproof & free from defect at the time of purchase. Therefore if your tarp has a defect due to a manufacturing fault, we will replace the item free of charge. We will always request a digital photograph of the fault - this can be emailed to sales@tarpaflex.co.uk. Our warranty does not cover for usage even if eyelets or the tarpaulin rips within 24 hours of purchase. Tarpaflex will not accept any responsibility for the misuse of our tarps for warranty claims. The Tarpaflex tarpaulin I received is shorter by 14cms than the size stated - please explain cut size.Cut size is the industry’s standard way to manufacture tarps. When an importer in the UK or any other part of the world purchases tarpaulins from the manufacturers in the Far East, we purchase the cloth for a tarp which is say 4m x 5m - this is the cut size. This material, being 4m x 5m, is then made into a tarpaulin. However, by making and bevelling over the hems and adding eyelets this reduces the final size of the tarp by up to 30cms, for example giving a finished size of 3m 70cms x 4m 70cms.How do I determine the quality of a Tarpaulin purchased by weight?
Tarpaflex sells tarpaulins by weight. Poly tarps, being made from a plastic raw material, are an oil based commodity - therefore you should focus on the weight in GSM (Grams per Sq Metre) when purchasing any tarpaulin. What methods of payment do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Cheques. Please make cheques payable to:Tarpaflex LtdThe Granary,

F. 01409 221190 * When using a tarpaulin to cover something, you should ensure that the tarp is well supported according to its size. Indeed, the bigger the tarp the more support it will require. A tarp should not be hung by its eyelets only; this places unnecessary stress on the eyelets, which could then pull out if they are put under undue force or pressure. Please note: Tarpaflex cannot be held responsible for damage caused by product misuse, or where sufficient care has not been exercised during inclement weather. No guarantee is given to the strength of the eyelets, and so, wherever possible, you should always use additional fixing points to limit the risk of damage.* Appropriate measures should be taken in accordance with weather conditions and the application you are putting the tarp to. An assessment should be made; if gale-force winds are due, then you will need to take extra care in ensuring your tarpaulin is really well secured!* If water is allowed to pool and collect on the tarp this will increase the stress not only on the eyelets, but also on the heat sealed seams; this could cause the seams to split and allow water through. Therefore you should always position the sheet in such a way to allow any excess water to drain off.* Please take care to avoid any sharp edges that could catch and potentially rip your tarpaulin. You should also be aware of contact spots or constant friction which could abraid or wear the material, thus reducing the lifespan of your cover.* In most instances, we recommend the use of bungee shock cord rather than rope, as the bungee cord is a more flexible product and will endure better in strong winds; this reduces the pressure exerted on the eyelets. On large tarps we recommend that rope is run over the top side of the sheet; this acts to prevent the wind lifting (and therefore straining) the tarpaulin.* We recommend using all of the eyelets on your tarpaulin, and where possible using extra fixing points. By securing your tarp at every available point, you will limit the possibility of wind being able to get in underneath. A tarpaulin can act like a sail if caught, and this extra stress can inevitably lead to eyelets or seams ripping. We can provide additional eyelets in the form of either brass or polycarbonate - click here to see our range.* If your tarpaulin does rip or split, we recommend that the damage is seen to as soon as possible. We can provide Tarp Tape, a strong and waterproof product which acts as an effective sealant in the case of damage, and as a great strengthener to reinforce stress points. The sooner a problem is seen to, the less likely a rip is to worsen.* Our Canvas tarpaulins are wax-treated to make them water resistant. This does not mean that the sheets are waterproof, and they will require re-proofing after wet weather exposure to keep their water resistant properties. Treatments can be purchased from most DIY and home hardware stores. For more information, see our Canvas Information Page.* Tarpaflex tarpaulins can be used for many different applications, and in most cases do a very good job; we have thousands of satisfied customers. However, customers should bear in mind that poly tarps, from economy grade and even up to heavy duty, are relatively low cost coverings. Please do not expect poly tarps to withstand the punishment that PVC truck tarps take; these latter sheets cost thousands of pounds and therefore endure prolonged heavy use, often for tens of years. Poly tarps from Tarpaflex and other tarp vendors do a very good job in their durability, and will often last for prolonged periods of time if used effectively, providing a great service. If you have any questions about our products, please contact us.* Our products are all sold with a warranty to be free from defects at the time of purchase. It is therefore imperative that you check your product before it is used for the first time. Due to weather conditions and the many different applications tarpaulins can be put to, we are unable to provide any additional guarantees.CANVAS TARPAULINS:Canvas is a popular option for those requiring a traditional tarpaulin; it is aesthetically pleasing, and offers heavy-duty, reliable coverage. However there are certain points that should be borne in mind in order to ensure the best performance from your canvas tarpaulin. These factors will also help to get the maximum lifespan from your sheet.Damage to canvas tarps generally occurs as a result of one of the following factors: moisture, incorrect storage, UV degradation, rodents, harsh cleaning and also bird droppings. The following points should therefore be adhered to as far as is possible, in order to prevent such issues:• if the tarpaulin is to be stored, ensure is it bone-dry; otherwise mould can grow very quickly
• remove any bird droppings or dirt before storing, to prevent any inherent acidity affecting the canvas. It may also be prudent to use rodent baits in areas where canvas is stored, to prevent pests from damaging the sheet.
• Avoid storing canvas on concrete; concrete can encourage mould growth, have an acidic effect on canvas and also lead to insect infestation.
•Do not use detergents to clean the canvas; these will break down and remove the waterproofing agent the tarp has been treated with. Similarly, do not use bleach.
•Do not use warm or hot water, or water under pressure; again these will prematurely remove the waterproofing treatment.
•Avoid using hard brushes to clean the sheet, as these are abrasive to the canvas. Where possible use a very soft-haired brush or broom to prevent damage to the material. We recommend ‘weathering’ the canvas before first use. The tarpaulin should be thoroughly wetted and left to dry, in order to shrink the canvas and tighten it at any stitched points, eg. seams and hems. Canvas can shrink by up to 4%, and so we recommend that this initial procedure is conducted before first use, both to avoid shrinkage once the tarp may have been fitted but also to stop the stitch-holes leaking. Our canvas tarpaulins are wax-treated to make them water-resistant; however, after prolonged exposure to water, these sheets will require reproofing. You may begin to notice that wet patches remain on the canvas after rain, the underside of the canvas gets wet, or the tarpaulin begins to feel dry and dusty; these are all indications that re-proofing may be required. Treatments such as Nikwax, Canvak and Granger’s Spray-On can be purchased online and from DIY/surplus/farm stores and the like.It is important to remove any dirt before proofing, to allow even and thorough application of the treatment. You should also treat any mould or mildew beforehand, as otherwise this will be sealed in by the treatment.Tarpaflex Tarpaulins: Size GuideWhen purchasing a tarpaulin it can be tricky to know what size to go for, and what grade is required. Here are some tips to bear in mind. For more information please contact our Sales Office on 01409 221192.Know you need a cover, but not sure what size? A tarpaulin is a two dimensional product (length x width). Therefore, if you are going to be using a tarp to cover a three dimensional object, all dimensions must be measured and totalled to determine the size of tarp you need. Before you buy your tarpaulin, it is also important to remember that the sizes stated refer to the cut size of the sheet; this is the industry-standard terminology to indicate the size of the fabric before it is seamed, hemmed and eyeleted. As a result, the finished size of a tarpaulin can be up to 30cms shorter. It is therefore important to allow for such a possible shortfall. Indeed, if you are working to particularly tight dimensions then it is worth opting for a larger size. With the exception of Canvas tarps, all of our tarpaulins are cut metrically (in metres), and so the imperial dimensions (in feet) are approximations only.Which grade should you go for? Our tarps are measured in GSM (Grams per Square Metre), which relates to the weight of the material a tarpaulin is manufactured from. In terms of the grades of tarpaulins we can supply, our range is from 80gsm up to 560gsm. We do not offer a guarantee to the lifespan of any of our products because of the huge variety of applications they can be put to; however as a general rule, the heavier the grade of tarpaulin, the more durable it can be expected to be.When choosing a tarpaulin, the application it is going to be put to should be considered, as well as the weather conditions it is to be used in. For example if you are looking to cover a roof for an extended time period, it may be worth opting for something of a heavier duty than a standard Economy sheet; under the same conditions, a heavy duty sheet is likely to last much longer.

* When using a tarpaulin to cover something, you should ensure that the tarp is well supported according to its size.
