I purchased the Flash 3 FL as a replacement for my 25-year-old Sierra Designs Super Flash. So far, I have used the tent for 10 nights in varying conditions in North Carolina (rainy, dry, cold (high 20's), and comfortable (low 60's). It works very well and has many pros and cons:PRO's:
*Light Weight (this is the FL, or "Feather Weight" version 4.? lbs
*Small packaged size (fits inside my pack, instead of strapping it on the outside)
*Rainfly attached to tent body allowed for a dry set-up in a moderate/heavy rain :-)
*Interior space - I bought the 3-person model expecting to fit 2 + gear comfortably. . . Our air mattresses are 25" wide. Very comfortable with two people + gear. I ended up using it with 4 on one Cub Scout trip (Myself + 3 under-10 children) and we were not too crowded. A pleasant surprise.
*Poles on outside of structure made for pretty easy set up
*Easy entry/exit with doors on each side
*Zippers are not too loud
*Mesh pockets inside make for good storage that is convenient
*Incredible ventilation (maintained a perfect temp on a warm weekend), too well-ventilated for a cool (high 20's night). I was too cold while using this tent by myself (in an EN comfort rated 20-degree bag. Maybe more people in the tent would help. Maybe a better bag would help more?? Maybe I shouldn't use a 3-season tent below freezing?? IDK, but I could never warm up the interior of the tent.
*Lots of interior space!
*NO condensation experienced in any of the conditions I have used this on
*NO leaks. POURING rain for nearly the entire weekend, and we were dry :-)
*There was a lot of "tent-envy" at the Cub Scout weekend. Many others were wet and miserable CON's:
*Should have glow-in-the-dark or reflective guy-lines. Many trips/falls occurred on a Cub Scout weekend.
*I don't like the "1 pole" design with plastic hubs. I would prefer several poles and it would be less confusing to set up.
*The plastic clips and hub-connectors seem to be cheap plastic. I have NOT had any problem with them, but they don't seem very robust. Perhaps "modern" plastics hold up better than I expect?
*There are two ~foot-long "poles" that are sewn into the awning (above each door) that are not removable. This makes it tougher to roll up the tent and be precise
*The gear loft area at the head/foot are a neat idea and we have used them for footwear, but don't like dragging muddy/wet shoes across the interior of the tent to put them on in the morning at the doors.
*I would like color-coded pole tips & grommets. The first two times we pitched, we incorrectly placed the "pole" in the wrong grommets. The claim is that this is one pole, but it is actually 4, held together by a swivel-hub. The hubs make a large "H" shape, and we had it rotated 90 degrees. This is probably a minor problem that only affects the 3-person model as the footprint is fairly square, as the 2-person is more rectangular and it would be much tougher to do this. . . Once I learned, it hasn't been a problem since, but I don't like stressing the aluminum and/or plastic clips more than necessaryOverall, I am really pleased with this purchase and would make it again. This is a very versatile tent that has met/exceeded my needs in a variety of circumstances. It is a high-performance piece of technology, that is light-weight, and well-constructed with innovative features. It works well on the trail and on a "pop-and-drop" Cub Scout weekend. As I encounter any more pros or cons, I will update my review.
For full disclosure, I am a "pro" member of Sierra Designs and purchased this tent at a discounted price. I am a public school teacher and teach an Adventure Education class and have reviewed a LOT of tents prior to making the decision to purchase this model. I miss using my Super Flash which weighed close to this one and was absolutely "bomb-proof" for 25+ years and a 4-season, 2-person+gear, 5-pound tent that I would gladly shell out $500+ for a "new" one with updated materials. The durability of that tent weighed heavily in my decision to stay "brand-true" and not go with another tent manufacturer. There are some other attractive tents out there, but when I know that Sierra Designs stuff holds up to the abuse of my family, that weighed in heavily in my decision. Very few stand behind their products as well as SD. I would say that without being a "pro" member!Happy tent shopping!
