Gränsfors Forest Axes are made to be used in the forest for everything from felling large trees to limbing small logs. The Gränsfors Bruk Wilderness Axe is an exclusive collaboration between Ray Mears and Gränsfors Bruk with years of designing, testing and refining put into it.  While many Gränsfors axes are forged in large presses, the Wilderness Axe is produced in small quantities by Gränsfors' experienced blacksmith who work by hand using a traditional 1940's hammer press.  The Gränsfors Bruk Wilderness Axe is a mix between the Gränsfors Scandinavian Forest Axe and the Gränsfors Small Forest Axe.  The handle is slightly longer than the Small Forest Axe which makes it better to swing with two hands and it has a heavier head than the Small Forest Axe to give real bite.  The weight of the head combined with its size makes the Wilderness Axe a little more potent to use - you can split wood with it one minute and then use it for carving the next.  Smiths: Each Gränsfors Bruk Axe has the initials of its maker proudly stamped on the Axe head.  The Wilderness Axe listed here are hand forged using a traditional 1940's hammer press by (JH) John Hårdsten.
The Gränsfors Bruk Wilderness Axe by Ray Mears will be delivered to you with a hickory handle and a full-grain leather sheath. With it, you will also receive the Gränsfors Axe book. Manufacturer: Gränsfors Bruk has been making handcrafted axes for over 100 years. Each axe is signed with the smith’s initials as a guarantee of quality. The company is located in the Swedish village of Gränsfors in northern Hälsingland. The forge sits at the heart of Gränsfors village and you can hear the rhythmic pounding from the forge as you approach.  The Handle: The handles on Gränsfors Bruk axes made from hickory. Hickory is the perfect wood because it is both strong and flexible. Hickory wood has long, parallel fibres which increases the life of the handle. To further improve the quality of each handle, it is soaked in hot linseed oil then treated with beeswax to make it more resistant to dirt and water.
