The basic rucksack design is optimized for alpine climbing and is supported by Gregory's Fusion Flex suspension system to keep the pack comfortable when you're hauling heavy loads of food, gear, and rocks (hey, training is important) up the mountain. When saving weight and covering serious vert take precedence over comfort and support, the framesheet, single aluminum stay, top lid, and hip belt can all be removed from to trim an additional pound and a half from the pack's total weight, which adds up over long distances (you'll save of full ton of lifting over 1,300 steps, if that helps put things in perspective). Gregory rigged the front of the Alpinisto with a front crampon pocket, dual ice axe attachment points, and dual ski carry straps, so you'll easily be able to carry all the gear you need whether you're ice climbing, mountaineering, or ski touring. There's also zippered hydration pocket, rope straps and haul loops for climbing trips, and a sled-pull attachment on the hip belt to make it easy to tug gear behind you on long approaches and hut trips.
