This new handcrafted Shepherds Crook has a 'medium weight' handle made from Ram's Horn joined through a Buffalo Horn spacer to a shank of 'Golden' Hazel. This has been straightened using steam. The handle has been finished with Wax, and the shank with Linseed Oil to protect it from the elements. This lovely stick still retains it's rural character. The full length of the stick is 53.25" 135cm. It would be a wonderful companion for those long walks in the hills, or as a conversation piece in your stick stand. I can shorten it if required fitting a new brass or rubber ferrule, at no extra charge. 'wilstonesticks' are Country Sticks, not like the manufactured ones you might buy in in a shop. I try and maintain a comprehensive stock of 200 quality sticks which always prove popular at Country Shows. Creating a stick handle from a horn necessitates a considerable degree of skill, and a great deal of time and patience. Horns need to be heated, carved and shaped every step of the way, and they are notorious for 'doing their own thing' . Being a recycled natural product, they often have minor imperfections and irregularities that may still be evident in the finished article. In my opinion this just adds to their individuality and charm. Unlike a Crook that is made from metal or a single length of steam bent timber, Crooks with a separate handle fitted to the shank are unlikely to stop a sheep travelling ‘at speed ‘without sustaining damage. My Crooks are made as strong as possible but the ornamental design makes them unreliable for catching sheep. However they make a wonderful accessory for those walks in the hills and countryside.
