American Forest Axe by WetterlingsThis is the special American design that forestry workers used when felling and limbing trees with saw and axe. A heavy head and a long handle gives energy and force to the work and at the same time making it safe and ergonomic. The length of the handle is suitable for large persons but will do the job for everybody who has the strength and willingness to use the power of this axe. The axe is made of Swedish Carbon Steel and the bit is hardened HRC 57-58. I will SHIP this Axe for FREE and as an added bonus you'll receive with your purchase the following FREE items as an added bonus!Free - 28''-36'' long x 7/8'' strip of premium top-grain leather to wrap the neck of the handle to protect it from miss-hits. Free - 24''-28'' long x 5/8'' wide premium top-grain leather lanyard. With a 5/8'' wide lanyard, it will help to prevent biting or digging into your wrist. Free - 10 mil Temflex 1100 tape by 3M. 3M Temflex 1100 is a tape made of tough PVC that is easy to apply. It provides excellent protection against abrasion. It is impact resistant and it also has high resistance to puncture or tearing. It resists corrosion caused by acids and resists salt water and sunlight. It is usable both indoors and outdoors.Free - a strip of strong and tough black rubber band to use as a base wrap before using the leather wrap. Very useful.Free - Three (3) thick, black rubber bands to secure the leather wrap in place when wrapping the neck of the handle. I am including 3 of these thick rubber bands so that you'll have extras just in case one gets lost or breaks eventually from use. What is premium top-grain leather? When leather is processed, the hide is thick so they split it in layers like an onion. The best leather is the TOP or the first layer thereby called top-grain leather. Premium leather means that it is processed in a way that the coating and coloring of the leather is done in such a way that it resists being scratched and also is easy to clean. Therefore premium top-grain leather is the best type of leather that you can get and it is only surpassed by 'select top-grain leather' where each hide is physically inspected for every little imperfection. They use 'select top-grain leather' in expensive cars like a Ferrari for example.Non-premium leathers may be scratched easily. If you run your fingernails on a leather that is not premium grade you can visibly see the scratch caused by your fingernail. My suggestion on how to wrap the neck of your axe or hatchet: I suggest using the rubber band strip that is provided as a base wrap first. The rubber base will help to prevent the wood from getting wet even if the leather gets wet. It will also act as a cushion to absorb some of the impact of mishits and it will help to prevent the leather wrap from getting damaged. Finish tying off the end using electrical or duct tape.Next use the leather wrap. Overlap edges of the leather as you wrap. This will double the thickness of the leather for better protection. It will also give better traction and grip which helps to prevent slippage when using your axe or hatchet. Use the rubber band that came with it to finish. Once rubber band is in place, use the 3M Temflex tape to wrap the top edge of the rubber band. Half of the tape should be on the rubber band and half on the leather wrap. This will help to prevent the rubber band from rolling off when using your axe or hatchet.Note to buyer: If you would like your Axe delivered to you with the neck handle already wrapped, send me a message when you buy it and I'll wrap it for you. Otherwise it will be delivered to you unwrapped and you'll have to wrap the neck of the handle yourself. The lanyard will be on the handle already. You can remove it if you don't want to use it. You can cut both leather strips shorter and narrower to size as needed. Manufacturer: Wetterlings axes and hatchets are forged in Storvik, Sweden using Swedish Carbon especially alloyed steel. The special axe steel alloy makes high quality hardening possible. Each axe is hand forged using hammer press machines that deliver many blows making the axe edges stronger than if they were drop forged. After grinding, hardening and tempering, Wetterlings axes keep a Rockwell hardness of HRC 57-58. This is why Wetterlings axes hold a sharp or keen edge longer than most other axes. The Handle: The handles on Wetterlings Axe and Hatchets are made and lathed from American Hickory. American Hickory has the best stress capacity and resistance to blows making it the wood of choice for good axe handles.Specifications:Blade: carbon steelBlade hardness: HRC 57-58Handle: American hickorySheath: full grain leatherWeight: 67.655 oz.
